48' SCHIONNING WILDERNESS 1480 (2007) OL

ONE OF THE FASTEST CRUISING CATAMARANS AVAILABLE. The Wilderness 1480 is extremely well suited to long distance cruising with her long hulls and good payload carrying ability which allow for comfortable Ocean crossings. She is easily managed shorthanded and has been well proven with some of this design doing multiple Ocean crossings. Her sister ship is on the USA east coast after sailing from Australia and her owner Neal Petersen, could not be happier. Presented at this stage she offers you several options to complete her to your own choice and specifications and not to be limited to a production cat market. Essentially this is a custom built boat for the discerning buyer.

This design was developed for one of our repeat customers after selling his 12m (custom) Wilderness. The initial layout reflects his years of sailing experience by blending all the best of his last boat with the extra space of the longer hulls.

She's fully pre-cut from light composite (pre-glassed) flat panels including a furniture kit for all cabins. These cabins come in individual modules so you can choose which cabins you wish to have pre-cut, this allows flexibility to customise your own interior.

The initial layout has 4 double cabins with a head and shower amidships to one side in the port hull and an en-suite in the forward double owners cabin. All cabins are very comfortable and airy with good overhead hatches and opening hull ports.

Access up and down is very easy with plenty of headroom above the stairs. The saloon and dinette are huge and well integrated with the cockpit. Door options allow for one or two doors between the saloon and cockpit as well as our special drop down window system in the doors and bulkheads. These open fully and can be closed to any opening size and when closed are very secure and tamper proof.

The cockpit is as standard on all our designs, its well used and proven with a radial track set on the seatback giving superb security and safety. All controls run to the cockpit where the central winch station controls the main halyards and single line reef lines.

Furled Genny and Reacher controls are also led aft to the cockpit reducing the need to go on deck to an absolute minimum. Should you choose a self tacking jib, this too has all controls led aft.

Steering remains the owner's choice with either a single wheel on centerline or set to either port or starboard. A twin wheel option suits the more performance oriented cruisers and offers better visibility. Our plans include a composite wheel and a composite sheave system with spectra line for a very reliable and economical steering system you can make yourself.

Our new easily built composite carbon mast and boom offer a big saving in costs. These mast plans are optional and available should you choose to go this way. Standard plans have fixed aluminium rig design.

As with all our designs, bridgedeck clearance is good being a real Ocean going cat she has 900 mm clearance to avoid any wave slam. She has the clear flat run aft for easy planing and the asymmetric inside flares forward for additional high buoyancy reserves and to help reduce spray for more comfortable sailing.

The flat bottom panel is v'd forward to avoid noise from slamming which can be a problem with flat panels. The deck sections are strip planked using the boat and additional full size plot shapes as a mould. This feature combined with the rounded cabin top makes it all but impossible to notice she's a chined boat. Looks and performance are every bit as stunning as any of our "soft" cat designs.

She is very quick and easy to build as mentioned, you can generate your own kit from measurements off sheets very easily, or have all items pre-cut for you. She uses her bulkheads as the mould, these are pre-cut and simply stand on the strongback, no expensive pre-cut mould, or the material and labour cost these attract in other "kit" catamarans. Simply stand the bulkheads on the strongback attach the full size panel sheets and tape the joins. Very little glassing and super light and super strong results.

Decks are rounded at the edges for low windage and high strength, walking areas are flat safe and secure. Cabin shapes are low windage and easy to walk up if needed.

Tramps forward are comfortable each side of the catwalk. Attachments are again all high strength, simple composite systems we've refined over hundreds of boats built.

Motor options on this cat are inboard 29hp shaft drive diesels set well forward under the double berths, props are protected by a skeg. The cat has very efficient daggerboards and can easily be beached on her reinforced bottom and supported aft by the skeg and rudders. The skegs help her track well on Ocean passages and protect the props and rudders from Ocean debris or grounding.

The construction plans include all of our "up to the minute" technical improvements including our new strikerless forward beam, all composite chain plates and many composite sheave options. These improve looks, strength and finish and save a lot of money.

She's a beautifully styled and balanced performance cruiser with long legs and sensible payload unhindered by excess baggage. Coupled with our unbeatable building system, she can offer you unsurpassed cruising pleasure with sailing and building speed to make your head spin.
