48' NAUTOR SWAN 48 (2001) "FORAGER" *LLC*

*LLC, SALES TAX INCENTIVES* The Swan 48 is a logical development within Nautor's distinctive Performance Range. The second yacht in the Swan line built to a style that will see Nautor comfortably into the next century. The German Frers design echoes the Swan 60 and is one whose pedigree the IMS racing fraternity will instantly recognize. The bow is more vertical, her effective waterline therefore longer and her maximum beam taken further aft, providing a wide Owner's cabin.

As the requirements of the cruising yachtsman become more and more at odds with those of the competitive racing man, Nautor has obliged with two versions of the 48. Both have the same hull shape, with a Divinycell sandwich deck. The Cruiser/Racer and Regatta versions of the 48 differ most in the major performance-related elements; keel and rig.

If you want to go racing, it's a deep draft keel which gives an edge on the wind. A fractional 7/8 rig, which takes a little more expertise to handle. And additional check-stays to provide ultimate control. The Cruiser/Racer owner may specify a choice of keels and a masthead or 15/16 rig with swept spreaders.

The deck layout is more conducive to cruising and the comfort level below is more than enough to win prizes. Where the Regatta features pipe cots forward and twin berths aft, her Cruiser/Racer sister accommodates an expansive double cabin aft and the equivalent right forward - both with adjacent heads/shower compartments.

There is even an option for two twin-bedded cabins forward. Both are more than capable of holding their own on the regatta circuit, but the Regatta is defiantly aimed at those with true competitive spirit. Acceptance for the design came immediately the 48 was first introduced. In a sailing review by Yachting World it was adjudged by the highly experienced journalist that "Boats that claim to possess the best of both worlds, and combine performance with comfort often fall short of the mark.

Not so the 48". The Swan 48 was found both nimble and responsive, but better yet she was described as "quite simply one of the prettiest boats this Finnish company has ever built- and one of the best thought-out, too." High praise for most manufacturers - yet, only to be expected where Nautor are concerned.

Innovatio. is allied to experience in every detail. The washboards, for example, slide into an integral stowage recess; the mainsail track is a Harken system and the sail itself is hoisted on a 2:1 tackle which makes it so much easier for the not-so-strong elements in a family crew. All in all this is a yacht for those who have much they wish to accomplish.
