It was a "gauntlet" thrown down by Beneteau that Farr Yacht Design couldn't resist. "Let's design a fast, fun, facile competitor!" And racers who have competed with the First 10R Believe the challenge has been met. Critics agree the sleek, open design, powerful sail plan, asymmetrical spinnaker and iron blade/lead bulb combo keel have earned this boat a Beneteau pedigree.

A unique combination of infusion and injection techniques have allowed Farr Yacht Design and Beneteau to optimize their proprietary "one shot" hull molding process for the First 10R, firmly mating hill and structural grid while giving Beneteau engineers precise control over shape and displacement.

Every aspect of this design, from the new hull form and appendage concepts, a high aspect carbon fiber Hall Spars mast to finely engineered weight distribution, contributes to the goal of producing the finest, well-rounded boat available. Non of the character of the luxurious Beneteau First Series has been sacrificed to devise this new racer.

While the perfect weight distribution around the center of gravity optimizes the performance of the First 10R, her fully functional galley, separate head and full sized navigation station round out the "creature comforts" of her accommodations. Luxuries aside, this is a racing boat, designed by racers to win.

To develop a fast, fun, facile competitor was the challenge that Farr Yacht Design and Beneteau shared in the development of this new First 10R. Beneteau called on Bruce Farr to give the First 10R a really revolutionary hull – both stable and powerful, with a large bowsprit forward allowing big spinnakers to be carried to advantage when reaching.

A real winner’s profile. The First 10R and the First 34.7 are the same boat & design. The US marketed the boat as the 10R and the rest of the world it was the 34.7.

Beneteau USA, the American division of the world’s largest sailboat manufacturer, builds hundreds of 32-49 foot production sailboats, as well as the Swift Trawler 42, in Marion, SC and imports sailing yachts up to 57 feet in length from its parent company in France.

The boats are sold through a network of over 40 dealers from the north in Alaska to the southern tip of Chile.

The Paris Boat Show: Introducing the Beneteau 10R

Sailing World’s Tony Bessinger attended the opening days of the Paris Boat Show to catch the introduction of the latest First series design from Beneteau.

The Paris Boat Show is one of three big shows held each year in France, and it’s where buyers go to order a boat in time for delivery the next spring. In Europe, where it’s known as the Salon Nautique de Paris it’s a big deal. As a result, manufacturers go all out, especially Beneteau, which takes up a big chunk of floor space in the huge show with boats, offices, a Beneteau clothing boutique, and lounge areas. The big shots sit behind closed doors in back offices doing business with dealers, while sales personnel work the floor, answer questions, and write up orders for new boats at one of the many tables available for that reason. Hostesses serve tiny plastic cups of espresso, and while “no smoking” signs are all over the building, everybody’s puffing away with abandon.

During our test sail of the First 10R we were impressed with the boat’s steering and its tight turning radius. We also found it’s easy for a crew of five to sail in light air.

For the second half of 2006, the Beneteau First 10R flew under the radar, competing in IRC and PHRF events on the East Coast. But as the new boat on the block, it was having a hard time getting results and respect. That all changed, however, when Robert Oberg’s Annapolis-based 10R NKE Electronics dominated its 13-boat PHRF 3 class at Acura Key West Race Week, and won the inaugural PHRF National Championship. The Beneteau First 10R resembles its ancestors, such as the popular First 40.7 and First 36.7, but one obvious attribute is a departure for the 123-year-old company. The bowsprit, mounted on the starboard side of the bow, which makes the 10R the first sprit boat Beneteau has offered to its North American market

ANYONE FOR T? Beneteau’s new First 34.7 opts for a T shaped keel. Andi Robertson finds it to be a cruiser with racing in its blood, which may spark a new One Design class.FOLLOWING in the successful wake of the First 36.7, 40.7, 44.7 and 47.7, the new Beneteau 34.7 is a different animal. It is the first time that the combined efforts of Farr Yacht Design and Beneteau have collaborated on a boat which addresses performance under IRC as its primary target. Previously it was an IMS/IRC mix and while all of them performed well under IMS initially, they all subsequently did well under IRC too. But this boat is a step up in terms of IRC dedication while remaining very much a straight down the line cruiser/racer, just as the rule favours.

It is a commercial success already. Launched in Paris last year, the first test sails only started in the early spring, but Beneteau have already sold 70 boats. Some of these sales from the plan are accounted for by the strong worldwide Beneteau dealer network, but Italy, France, Spain and the UK have all pre-orders of six or seven boats apiece, mostly from boat shows.
