67' PACIFICA 67 CONVERTIBLE (1985) "CHEAPER THAN RACING" *REMODELED*

*TASTEFULLY UPDATED* The 67 is a breakthrough for Pacifica for a number of reasons. Ever since Stu and Wanda Kipper "walked in to buy a boat and ended up buying the boat company" in 1970, Pacifica has maintained their well-respected reputation on the West Coast for building the highest quality semi-custom sportfishers available. The 67 is big, but not so big that you fail to notice numerous, thoughtful touches, too. From the very moment you step aboard and down into the cockpit, on steps that are molded right into the gunwales, you realize that the owner has 64 come to fish. Indeed, there are 19 rod holders, two 11 ~on bait tanks and enough tackle storage beneath the tanks for an army of anglers.

With a name like Pacifica 67 you'd think the towering world-class sportfisherman would be fated forever for the laid-back waters off Southern California. But now the big customized yacht has migrated to the East Coast, where it seems perfectly at home. "We've built the Pacifica 67 to fish big time, for the big fish and to go for the big money," says Bob Gunderson at Pacifica by Kipper Yachts, as we headed toward their Panama City, Aorida plant For 16 years.

Pacifica has been reknowned on the West Coast for its sturdy, high-speed, durable fishing machines. ln 1970, Pacifica 44s were blasting out ahead of the pack at 30, even 40 knots, and by winter hordes of Pacificas would migrate south to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, sportfishing mecca for westerners. These days some 123 Pacifica sportfishers prowl the California coastline, some even fishing the wild waters off Hawaii. Was the East really ready for this newcomer? "Pacifica? What's a Pacifica? Many of the visitors with heavy Southern accents initially queried as they gazed upon the towering maxi Lookout, while zealously pulling off their shoes to come aboard and inspect her.

Strategically placed in the spacious 15 by 17-foot cockpit is a grand fighting chair, evidence that the owner has given serious thought to trying his hand at stalking the big marlin, as well. Custom, there's that word again, built-in fishboxes are large and conveniently placed so they're not under fool.

Large, double, full-service shore power plugs on self-winding reels are located both port and starboard, and engine air is taken through the sidewalls of the cockpit from underneath the gunwales, cutting down appreciably on the delivery of damaging salt air to the engine room.

Before climbing the half dozen steps into the coolness of the air-conditioned salon, Bill Jahns, general manager in Panama City, has one more extraordinary feature to demonstrate: With the mere flick of a switch, the stairwell pneumatically rises on command to reveal engine room access.

Then back into the salon, and its cool heaven of air conditioning, with Jimmy Buffett resounding at full throttle. Wonderfully clutter-free, the salon affords a complete unobscured, panoramic view. No bulkheads to be found anywhere the salon ceiling/bridge floor is structurally engineered to be self-supporting so we luxuriate in a 360-degree view of the marina at Bay Point.

There's ample storage behind the low-lying rosewood cabinets. Rosewood cabinets? Recall, now, Pacifica builds semi-custom custom yachts, and the owner of this model was partial to his rosewood office desk and requested that the 67's interior be decorated in it, as well. Your wish is Pacifica's command, more or less. In fact, the owner personally went south to a Los Angeles lumbermill to locate the rosewood log.

The galley is aft, easily accessible from the cockpit and thoughtfully laid out by Wanda, who was once an artist at Walt Disney studios. It sports all the most up-to-date kitchen comforts: two undercounter freezers, a pair of refrigerators, Nu-Tone Blender Center, full-sized dishwasher, Jenn Air Microwave convection oven, trash compactor, large double sink, and instant hot water attachment.

Before heading below, we look out upon the foredeck, at 28 x 20.5 feet, plenty large for the likes of any size runabout. Then, rounding the 180-degree stairwell, we note the rounded comer decor that's carried throughout below-decks. Where there's a comer, it's a rounded comer. Nice touch.

To starboard is the master stateroom replete with a walkaround queen-size bed. Extra touches? You bet The hanging lockers and drawers are lined with cedar, and Jahns had a giant marlin etched onto the wall-sized mirror above the headboard as a surprise for the owner.

The master head? "It's really a shame to call it a head, because it's really a bathroom," declares Wanda. Two steps down into the bathroom we find a spacious room with large shower, complete
