Bayliner presents "the instant motor yacht." Not only fun, the 4387 is easy to understand...

OVER THE YEARS, the Bayliner logo has become a symbol of seagoing populism in the United States. Even if you're new to boating, you've probably heard of " the world's largest builder of boats," and how it got started more than 30 years ago in a little store in Seattle. Chances are there's a dealership in your town, or in a neighboring one. Just about every marina in America contains at least one Bayliner.

Recently, we tested the company's newest motor yacht-the 4387 Aft Cabin (with twin 330 U.S. Marine gas engines)-on a broad stretch of the St. Lucie River, near Stuart, Florida. Fear not. The introduction of such a vessel does not spell the end of seagoing populism in this country. Actually, Bayliner has been building motor yachts for more than five years now. And, by virtue of standardization and volume production, the company continues to offer its customers some astonishingly affordable boats, despite their increasing size and complexity.

The 4387 Aft Cabin, for example, with standard gas engines (diesels are available for $25,000 extra), is base priced at $169,990. That's with two separate heads adjoining two separate staterooms, standard upper and lower helm stations, and a standard 9kw Kohler generator.

Our test boat cost more ($195,537), but she was optioned to the hilt. We had all sorts of goodies aboard, among them a Marine Air a/c, 12.5kw generator, dual 50-amp dockside hookup, and electric heaters ($12,500 total), radar wing, hardtop, and full enclosure ($2,500 total), Laundry Lion washer/dryer ($2,200), and Cruiser Package, including Black & Decker coffee-maker, Humminbird depthsounder, Ray-line spotlight, Standard Communication Horizon VHF, fender racks, Muir Cougar electric windlass, Whirlpool microwave oven, and trash compactor, carpet runners, and ULine ice-maker (about $8,995 total).

The dinette table converts to a berth and the woodwork is solid ash.

Anyway, after a couple of scenic hours spent roiling the waters of the St. Lucie (top speed: 30.9 mph), we began a slow cruise back towards our berth at the Boat Center, owned and operated by Buzz Taylor, a local Bayliner dealer. Visibility was good at the helm topside, and I found the barrel-type seat to be comfortable enough for long-range cruising. Buzz seemed to enjoy the ample guest seating on the flying bridge just as much . The boat both tracked well and steered easily, even at dead idle in shallow water, probably due to the directional stability inherent in a long keel. To negotiate an array of anchored sailboats, the 4387 Aft Cabin required little wheel and absolutely no throttle jockeying, although there was a bit of a breeze blowing. In one particularly narrow channel, she seemed to pretty much steer herself.

(Of course, just about every positive design feature below the waterline has its black side. Keels, on the one hand, are great for tracking and may conceivably protect a set of props in a grounding. On the other hand, a keel often widens a boat's turning radius. It came as no surprise when our test boat did not turn on a dime at top speed.)

During the last 15 minutes of the trip back to the Boat Center, Buzz and I met no less than three other Bayliners plying the same waterway. On a day with very little traffic!

''Yes sir," said Buzz, waving at a couple of old guys in a Capri. "A Bayliner's an easy boat to own."

Bayliner 4387 Performance Engine SpecificationsIndeed, the new 4387 Aft Cabin is perhaps the lowest priced of all major motor yacht offerings. But Buzz was not talking solely about money when he made his remark.

He explained that these days, he runs into motor-yacht minded buyers who have very little seafaring or boat-handling experience.

These folks want to learn to operate and maintain big boats themselves, with minimal help and no professional crew. According to Buzz, such people benefit enormously from owning vessels like the 4387, with common-sense engineering and design features that are almost self explanatory. In short, they save themselves more than money by buying" . . . an easy boat to own."

To be more specific about all this, let's take a look at the engine room. Machinery spaces on most modern yachts are complicated and, unfortunately, some of the complexity is exaggerated by ship's systems that are illogically laid out and crowded. Not so with this Bayliner. Ease of operation and maintenance, as well as safety and ample elbowroom are the priorities here.

You can read this engine room like a book. All the through-hull fittings (manganese bronze) are labled. Metal plates are fastened to the bottom of the boat next to each seacock, telling you it's the "Forward Head Pickup" or the "Starboard Engine Pickup." (All hoses are double-clamped to the seacocks.) Moreover, many of the valves, pumps, terminals, and through-hulls involved in various onboard systems (waste, water, electrical, a/c, etc.) are labeled.

The fuel manifold is just as easy to read as the fittings. Emergency fuel shutoffs and tank switches- all of them Apollo ball valves- are laid out on a large panel at the forward end of the engine room. The panel is easily accessed by removing the steps which communicate between the salon and the galley/dinette area. Except for mounting the fuel shutoffs outside of the machinery spaces entirely, this is the best location for them. In an emergency, you can shut the engines down without really having to enter the engine room. In addition, all the fuel shutoff valves are plainly labeled, lined up side-by-side on the panel, and turn "on" or "off" in exactly the same way. Hard to get confused even in a pinch

Battery maintenance on this boat is easy. No digging around the bilges with your trusty hydrometer in hand and your feet sloshing. There were four batteries (in heavy-duty battery boxes) on our test boat, secured to two shelves, forward of the engines, on the starboard side. The batteries on the bottom shelf, are easily accessed via the galley/dinette stairway The top shelf is accessed through hatch in the salon. One suggestion here. The salon hatch makes checking the batteries easy. However, removing this snugly fitting hatch is a pain. A recessed lifting ring is needed. It would work a lot better than pulling on the pile of the carpet.

And how about servicing the engines? With two big hatches in the saIon sole, and two more under stairways at either end of the engine room, access is extraordinarily good, even to the stuffing boxes and the Hurth transmissions abaft the twin V-8s. No problem finding or getting to dip sticks and filters, either.

A Thinking Man's Plumbing

In addition to "easy to own" features, the 4387's engine room contains many other features representative of good, solid workmanship. The twin fuel tanks, for example, are made of welded aluminum (.125 thick).

To reduce free-surface effect when they're not entirely full, the tanks are thoroughly baffled. They're also secured by means of removable aluminum straps and rest on strips of a rubber-like material which absorbs vibration.

The standard 11-gallon Atwood water heater, located forward of the port engine, is part of a very well-thoughtout plumbing system consisting of "poly" pipe and bronze compression fittings. Got a problem? Simply unscrew the fittings and disassemble part or all of the system. There are two drains near the heater for winterization.

The engines themselves are mounted on 3/8" aluminum flanges, through-bolted to stringers of 2" x 10" Alaskan yellow cedar, encapsulated in glass. In way of the engines, the width of each supporting stringer is tripled. Limber holes are lined with PVC pipe to prevent water penetration into the stringers.

Chafing gear is used where pipes or wires pass through bulkheads. There are separate bronze sea strainers for both main engines and the generator. Overboard discharge hoses on the six bilge pumps are looped to keep sea water out. Through-hulls are bonded. Engines have low-oil and high-water temperature alarms and the water tank has a dial gauge.

Bayliner 4387 Layout SpecsIn summary, this engine room is an easy one to deal with, even for someone who's relatively new to motor yachts. There's only one thing I can find to complain about. Fuel lines running athwartship between the manifold, fuel tanks, and engines are routed in what I think is a questionable manner.

From above, with hatches off, this plywood "lip" looks like it might support a person's weight, despite a small sticker (roughly 3" in diameter) which warns against this.

Say, for example, you've got the hook down in a fairly open anchorage with a good wind blowing. You're standing next to an open hatch in the salon, having just checked the oil prior to cranking the mains. It's rough. You lose your balance and step on the plywood board to regain it. Crash! Who knows what happens to the fuel lines?

After the test, I talked with the folks at Bayliner and they agree there's a problem here. As a result, they're going to beef up the plywood, and fasten it with gussets and metal stiffeners. That way, it will support a person's weight and there's no chance of an accident, a company spokesman said.

More For Less

Although we've devoted much of this report on the 4387 to what's going on belowdecks, there are an awful lot of good things going on above. Just keep in mind that all these lovely little details go hand-in-hand with an even lovelier base price.

Let's start at the bow. The interior of the chain locker is gel-coated, like the rest of the "inside" of the boat. No raw fiberglass anywhere. There's an extra anchor locker on deck and striker plates on the bow pulpit to prevent gel coat damage when pulling the hook. Hanging lockers in the forward stateroom are partially panelled with cedar. A partial treatment is cheaper than full panelling and smells just as good.

The sole in the conveniently U-shaped galley is pebble linoleum rather than teak parquet or Pirelli tile. Again, this saves money and in my opinion, looks better and is easier to maintain. There is stowage galore in the galley. Cabinets are held together, from the inside, with long pieces of aluminum angle, rather than smaller "tags" which sooner or later allow noisy vibration to occur. Drawers are made of mahogany, in part stapled together. Staples save time over tenonand- mortise joints. For cross-ventilation, there are opening ports on either side of the galley/dinette area.

With the heavy-duty (and lockable) Bomar, smoked-acrylic sliding hatch between the aft deck and the salon, visibility from the lower helm station is close to 360 degrees. The hatch is curved, and produces a greenhouse-like effect at the rear of the salon. There is rod stowage and general stowage lockers (lockable) in the pleated overhead liner in the salon.

Because the master stateroom aft stretches the full width of the vessel, it is a huge place. Like a room at the Hyatt. The island berth in the stateroom is a 6'6" long and 4' wide, with stowage drawers and stowage bins under (While examinimng one of the bins under the berth, I came across a problem which Bayliner says it is in the process of rectifying. There was no backing plate- only washers- under the locknuts securing the struts to the hull.)

There's a vanity on the starboard side, as well as a large, adjoining head (with stall shower). The shower contains a comfortable sculptured fiberglass seat. A nice bonus. Our test boat was equipped with an optional hardtop which made the aft deck into pleasant back porch or, with full enclosure, a sort of seagoing "Florida Room."

Couple this feature with the swim platform astern, and you've got yourself the equivalent of a cottage, with private beach and shower.

According to Bayliner, there's another motor yacht scheduled fo launch sometime next year. Something in the 50' range. Even companies with folksy, populist reputation can make it big in yachts these day which seems to say something about the direction modem American boating has taken over the past couple of years. At any rate, as long as Bayliner continues to keep up the good work by building affordably priced, user-friendly vessels like the new 4387 Aft Cabin, it certainly appears that there'll be no letup in an already enviable history of success.
