The Offshore 58's fine entry and deep forefoot combine to split the waves...

I'M ABOARD the Offshore 58 Pilothouse, and I'm making notes: "Formica-lined drawers; dovetail joints; no exterior wood or aluminum; lights on dimmers; handsomely decorated; dual engine-room access; super layout; stainless steel engine mounts; easy stuffing-box access; private master stateroom arrangement with convenient head and washer/dryer; tremendous drawer and hanging storage space; great nonskid; big cockpit; huge bridge deck .... " It all adds up to a very impressive yacht.

Offshore has been building yachts for over four decades. The 58 Pilothouse is a model aimed at owner/operators husband- and-wife teams who are self-sufficient boat handlers and have no need of a crew. It's also a yacht for people who like to feel the wind in their hair. Offshore makes self-sufficiency as easy as possible: Wide walkways make it easy to handle lines. Port and starboard doors on either side of the pilothouse make it easy to move from the helm to the rails, and the standard cockpit controls make docking (and fishing) a breeze-especially with the optional bow thruster.

WHATEVER YOU LIKE

Couples who enjoy running a yacht themselves are usually quite particular about what they want and where they want it. This is another reason why many of them find an Offshore so appealing. Offshores are semi-custom yachts, which means you can have pretty much whatever you like on them. When asked what 's negotiable, Offshore's Ease Coast distributor Greg Sturg is says, "Everything but the bulkheads." Buyers are typically people who have owned several boats before, and they're often not satisfied with rigid formats. So they turn to Offshore, where their wishes become commands. This latitude extends right into the engine room, where a wide range of power options are available.

Standard engines are 550- hp Detroit diesels, but Caterpillar, MTU, MAN or Lugger iron is also possible. The 58 shown here has a pair of 600-hp Cats for a top speed of 23 knots (2300 rpm) and a cruising speed of 19 knots (2100 rpm; 45 gph). We sustained this into a four-foot head sea. The smooth ride reflected the extremely fine entry and deep forefoot of naval architect Bill Crealock's hull. A hard chine and shallow transom afford lateral stability. Combined with a low profile, a low center of gravity and a long, shallow keel, the hull design gives the 58 Pilothouse a winning split personality. You can run at 8 co 10 knots and burn only 8 gph and go 2,000 miles on a tank of fuel (even farther if you freewheel one side with the ZF gear), or you can get up and really go. When you do, this stately, yet sleek, yacht will turn heads.

Offshore's solidly built 58 Pilothouse isn't just another pretty boat... When you come right down to it, if you're buying a pleasure boat, you're really buying a hull. The rest is just icing on the cake. Without a solidly built and seaworthy hull, it won't matter how luxurious the interior may be, how tawny the teak is or how powerful the engines are. So, before you start going gaga over the interior, it's wise to take a moment to study the...

    48' OFFSHORE 48 SEDAN (1988) "REGGAE AMBASSADOR"

The Offshore 48 Sedan is a distinctive and well-conceived sedan with several features of interest to experienced cruisers. While she’s not designed with the mega-volume interior found in some other yachts her size, the Offshore does place a priority on outdoor recreation as her generous deck areas suggest. Not only are the walkarounds wide and the cockpit spacious, but the flybridge dimensions are extremely generous for a 48-footer....
