"Because living well is still the best revenge..." as I was heading out to test the Riva 59 Mercurius, it soon became obvious that some pretty rough conditions lay ahead. There were steady four-foot seas with a windblown chop on top, so I decided to retract tHe power helm. On many boats, a retractable helm is an all-or-nothing proposition-when it's down, all your gauges and electronics are hidden. On the 59 Mercurius, though, only the electronics fold down, which means that all the analog instruments can still be used so you can make sure your engines are functioning properly. (It helped me conduct BOATING's Certified Test Results because I was able to keep a constant eye on the tachometers, great when you're running in 300-rpm increments.)
