QUEENSHIP 64' PILOTHOUSE OWNER TESTIMONIAL:

"I WANTED THE SAFEST BOAT I COULD FIND." Steve Schude got hooked on Queenships' looks. Then he discovered how strong and safe they are. The Schude's own Deregulation 4, a 64'er in Queenship's 61 ' to 70' Admiralty series. Steve says she's built and hanclles like "a mini-mega yacht':

"She had such beautiful lines," says Steve of the first Queenship he ever saw, a 61'er in the Admiralty series. "She looked just like a mini-mega yacht. I've seen my share of boats and I knew I wanted a Queenship the instant I saw her." - Steve had just sold his brand new 52' production boat that he had owned for all of two weeks. "It was OK in normal conditions, but when the sea got rougher I felt like I no longer had full control. One trip on it with my family was enough. The way she handled in 8' swells scared us. I put her up for sale the day we got back to port."

Shortly after his broker showed him the Queenship, Steve and his wife, Linda visited the Queenship yard near Vancouver, BC. "We found out how Queenship makes their boats so strong. They do it all by hand," says Steve. "The structural grid of stringers and ribs is awesome. And the way they fuse everything together so precisely makes you realize these guys are very serious about quality.

They build these boats to be as strong and safe as they can. Another feature - standard on Queenships, almost unheard of elsewhere - drove home to the Schude's the yard's obsession with safety. Every Queenship has a complete back-up bilge system with an alarm you could hear in a hurricane.

"That just spoke volumes to me about their fail-safe attitude," says Schude. Steve and Linda were also reassured to learn how the yard uses composites in hull topsides and superstructure wherever possible to build in maximurn strength with less weight.

Mike Harling, Queenship's senior in-house naval architect for the past 15 years, explained the engineering principles that guide every design and construction decision. The Schude's also discovered how they could get exactly the motor yacht they wanted.

"I really liked the custom work I saw on other boats underway at the yard, says Steve. "It went way beyond the lip service about customizing I've heard elsewhere. Queenship walks their talk in building custom and semi-custom boats within their production hulls. They really go out of their way to do it your way. And the quality is just phenomenal."

The Schude's named their 64' Queenship Deregulation 4 in honor of the legislation that gave their pay phone business a big boost. Queenship fitted out her lazarrette with a workshop and built-in lockers for their scuba and fishing gear.

They finished the interior and cabinetry in gorgeous book matched, quarter-sawn cherry and even tucked away an apartment-sized washer and dryer off the accommodation deck companionway, "right where it ought to be," adds Linda. Steve found out just how strong and sea-kindly Queenships are on the Deregulation 4's delivery trip.

After rounding Cape Slattery off Washingston State's northwest tip, they found themselves in 18' waves and a following sea. "It felt rock solid, like being on a mini-mega yacht, which is just how she looks. I'd never done the whole West Coast before, so I had an experienced captain who knew the ropes.

When we were through the worst of it, he looked at me and said very quietly, "you don't have to worry about being safe on this boat. She handles like a dream... Subsequent bouts with rough seas and hours on end of hull-pounding passages during explorations of Mexico's Pacific Coast have only strengthened Steve's confidence.

The Schucle's game plan now calls for a bigger motor yacht to take through the Panama Canal to explore the Caribbean. Naturally, it will be a Queenship, says Steve. "We wouldn't feel as safe on anything else."
