Like its larger cousin the Norseman 447, the Norseman 400, designed by Gary Grant, began life as a concept for a fast but voluminous offshore cruiser. With a displacement of nearly 10 tons, a ballast-to-displacement ratio of 40 percent and a tall sloop rig spreading 766 square feet of working canvas, this 40-footer is stiff enough to face a breeze and heavy enough to behave well in sloppy and choppy seas.

Also, she is fast. Her hull has a fairly flat underbody and a broad, powerful stern. She scoots downwind and has the power to climb to windward. If the hull shape has any drawbacks, it may be the tendency of such broad-stern craft to slew and twist a bit running before a large following sea. Grant has compensated for this by giving the N400 a large rudder, placed well aft and mounted on a high-aspect skeg.

The main story of the N400 is hull volume. Carrying a 13'4" maximum beam, the interior has room to offer the amenities of a larger boat. As has become fashionable in recent years, the forward bulkheads are pushed quite far into the bow, opening up the saloon but squeezing the forward cabin a bit. The head in between is large and very well designed. The main saloon has a dinette to port, a settee to starboard and a pilot berth above the settee - the most coveted berth when sailing offshore. The quarter cabin, which is tucked in under the cockpit, is small, but large enough to stand up in and change one's pants.

For many sailors, the measure of a seagoing layout below is the galley. By that score alone the N400 scores very high. The galley is U-shaped with the three-burner propane stove outboard, double sinks forward and a large refrigerator/freezer aft. All sorts of interesting and useful lockers have been built in around the galley.
