If one mark of a successful yacht is its sales record, then the new Bayliner 4550 Pilothouse Motoryacht is extremely successful. More than 25 of these boats shipped in its first year and the company reports that production is sold out for nearly a year.

Bayliner has become one of the world's largest boatbuilders by producing boats with acceptable styling and construction combined with very low price. One of the trade-offs is that there is a "one-boat one-way" policy that virtually eliminates optional equipment and that's the case with the new 45 .... the option list is tiny, and Bayliner has already made the decision about what you can and can't have.

European in styling, but not enough to offend conservative buyers, this is a very big boat. Boarding is made easy by the standard swim platform and transom door, and entry into the saloon is through a sliding door. A large settee and dining table are to port, while a pair of chairs and a small table are against teak-veneered bulkheads. The 4550's galley- up arrangement is very thoroughly equipped, with 4- burner stove and oven, microwave, refrigerator/freezer, trash compactor, and food processor. Opposite the galley is an entertainment center with icemaker, liquor stowage cabinet, and built-in stereo. A flashy brass-fixtured sink for the wet bar seems redundant since the galley sink is only a step away, but then drinkers won't interrupt the cook.

The pilothouse is truly an all-weather steering station with a navy-type wheel amidships for the hydraulic steering, and a sweeping expanse of black instrument console. A chart stowage area is to port, and the d.c. electrical system is neatly arranged to starboard, including an outline of the boat with tiny lights to show various systems in use. Behind the helm is a settee, and doors lead to the weather decks on either side. The view forward is excellent, but the helm is blind aft, so docking and maneuvering must be done f tom the bridge.

A short companionway from the pilothouse leads to the spacious flying bridge with a helm station that duplicates the one belowdecks. The helmsman's seat is augmented by twin wrap-around vinyl lounges that leave an open area aft.

Though she can sleep three couples, this is really a two-couple boat with space for two kids if necessary. The guest stateroom is mostly a queen-sized berth with a small standing area and stowage is minimal, consisting of drawers under the bunk and a half-height hanging locker. Across the hall is the guest head compartment with enclosed stall shower.

Forward is the master stateroom, with a king-sized berth amidships on a platform. Two narrow hanging lockers and under-berth drawers provide stowage, while the mirrored headboard doubles as the bulkhead for the chain locker. The master bath is up a step from the stateroom.

Opening onto the master stateroom is a den/ office/ guest stateroom with hinged upper and lower single berths, a fold-out writing desk and a wardrobe. Since it takes no less than three sets of doors and a substantial amount of sliding and unfolding to close off the cabin, it's probably best to keep this area open for stowage of clothing or gear rather than for guests.

Diesel power for the Bay liner 4550 is standard and, once again, there are no choices other than the pair of Hino diesels that produce 220 hp. each. A 7.7-kw. diesel generator is standard, although it can be replaced during construction by a 12.5-kw. generator which is required for the optional air conditioning system.

The cruising speed is 18.7 m.p.h. at 2,500 r.p.m. with a fuel consumption of around 1 m.p.g., and a top speed (3,000 r.p.m.) of 22.5 m.p.h. isn't bad at all for a boat that weighs in the 13-ton range, although the fuel capacity of only 500 gallons restricts the cruising range to short trips.

On any boat where price is a major consideration, there are some drawbacks and the most obvious is the quality and finish of the woodwork. But in spite of the "anything you want as long as we choose it" method of outfitting, there really isn't much to add to the Bay liner 4550. The anchor windlass is standard, as well as such items as built-in vacuum cleaner system, wash-down pumps, all cushions including a foredeck seat, and even canvas items such as a cockpit curtain and bridge covers.

The result is a 45-foot all-weather motor yacht with a good turn of speed and comfortable accommodations for about $236,000 and some change. At about a third less than a comparably equipped traditional motor yacht, there are bound to be desertions from many of the famous builders, and the 4550 is certainly a good boat for the yachtsman on a budget.
